Facebook owned messaging application whatsapp could soon enter the Indian digital payment market as the company released the job advertisement regarding the same. Amongst WhatsApp New Features list 2017 this feature is going to be one of the most unique features yet in any messaging application.
Digital Payment services by Whatsapp is said to be rolled out in India within 6 months. The report also states that WhatsApp, which has no team in India, is looking to hire a “Digital Transactions Lead” to head this initiative in the country.

The job advertisement by Whatsapp on its website that the company is looking for a candidate with a technical and financial background – who understands India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and the BHIM payments app that enable money transfers and merchant payments using mobile numbers – to be its digital transactions lead for the country says it that something exiting is to be planned by Whatsapp.

India is important country for Whatsapp. In a statement with TechCrunch WhatsApp said, “India is an important country for WhatsApp, and we understand how we can contribute more to the vision of Digital India. We’re exploring how we might work with companies that share this vision and continuing to listen closely to feedback from our users.”
Whatsapp co-founder Brian Acton had told local media that app was in early stages of investigating digital payments in the country and have also talked Indian government on this matter.
In the previous year’s many startups launched their mobile based UPI such as Trupay, Razorpay and others. Some of them were successful while some of them were unable to reach every consumer.

After the news of Whatsapp new payment feature rolled out Sweden based truecaller which has a good market in Indi also introduced a new service Truecaller pay with a tie up with ICICI Bank.
This step of Whatsapp will reorganize payments in India as same as messaging Application WeChat has done in China. Digital payments in India are on move after the launch of several schemes like Digital India and the main impact that boosted Digital payments was the demonetization as demonetization forced many users to switch to digital payment because of shortage of cash.
